While I might hate sunscreen, I do wear it every day, rain or shine.  It is the one thing I never leave the house without. It is also the easiest anti-aging item to have in your skincare arsenal because, even if there's no chance of burning (UVB rays) on the cloudiest day, there will always be dermis penetrating radiation (UVA rays) - the premature aging culprit.  So I urge you, love it or hate it, put it on every day!  Below are a few of the least icky, chalky, and sticky chemical free SPFs that I love.  And if you're still using, well, essentially anything purchased at a grocery store or drug store, read this blog post and realize why chemical sunscreen is so terrible.

A quick note:  If you're planning on extended sun exposure, you must reapply every 60-80 minutes for these chemical free blocks to work.  So stock up, especially on the body options, you'll end up using almost a whole tube during one day at the beach.

Sunscreens For Your Face

Kari Gran's Three Sixty Five SPF 28

Organic, Specialty $$

This is my all time favorite sunscreen.  It feels unlike any SPF you've ever used! It's lightweight with a consistancy more like a facial oil than a sun block.  It's non-nano zinc base melts effortlessly into your skin, leaving no white residue behind and her ingredient list is enviable.

Great for all skin types. Awesome under makeup.

Active Ingredients:  Non-Nano Zinc Oxide 17%

Non Actives: Non-GMO Rubus Ideaus (Red Raspberry Seed) Oil, Non-GMO Prunus Domestica (French Plum Seed) Oil, Organic Macadamia Ternifolia (Macadamia Nut Seed) Oil, Non-GMO Aleurites Moluccana (Kukui Seed) Oil, Organic Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Seed) Oil, Organic Beeswax,Tocopherol (Non-GMO Vitamin E from Sunflower)

Alternatively, check out Kypris's Pot of Shade: Heliotropic Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($$) with it's 20% non-nano zinc oxide, for another melts-right-in and leaves-no-trace option. Or Sircuit Skin's Sol Avert SPF 30 ($$) for a more traditional feel yet super lightweight.

Tinted CC's & BB's

Juice Beauty's Stem Cellular CC Cream SPF 30

This is my all time favorite tinted SPF.  Not only does it give you light coverage and sun protection, but it also uses Juice's Stem Cell technology for added anti-aging benefits!

A color for everyone. Great for no make-up days or on it's own with a little concealer.

I also love Suntegrity's 5-in-1 Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF30 ($$) which also comes in a tint free original version; and Andalou Naturals selection of CC and BB creams ($) which focus on specific skin concerns like brightening and clarifying.

Sunscreen For Yo Body

DeVita solar Body Moisturizer SPF 30

Natural, Mass $

With a base of hyaluronic acid, this featherlight  sunscreen feels more like a body lotion than a sun block. This was the first chemical free SPF I ever used and has remained a staple in my routine to this day (their face block is fantastic too).

Great for everyday use.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: MICRONIZED ZINC OXIDE: 14% (TRANSPARENT) Purified Water, Certified Organic Aloe Vera Gel, Japanese Green Tea Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides (derived from Coconut Oil), Vegetable Glycerin, Dexapathenol (Vitamin B5), Vitamin E (Acetate), Olive Oil, Lecithin, Shea Butter, Copper Gluconate, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Olive Squalene, Vitamin A (Palmitate), Hyaluronic Acid, NaPCA, Essential Oils of Lavender and Chamomile, Rosehip Oil, Centella Asiatica Extract, Seaweed Extract, Riboflavin Phosphate, Carrageenan, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Allantoin, and Grape Seed Extract.

When I hike or walk to the gym, I opt for a thicker, more sweat resistant formula like Suntegrity's Natural Mineral Sunscreen For Body SPF30 ($$) or Juice Beauty's SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen ($). These thicker options are harder to rub in and don't feel that amazing, especially once you start sweating, but they do work.  I guess we can't have everything.

For extended sun exposure, SPF alone is not enough. That's why, if I know I'll be out for more than an hour, I always wear a hat and sunglasses for extra protection.

This is my favorite hat to wear hiking but it's also cute enough to wear out with a dress on sunny afternoons. Plus it's only $16! Can't go wrong with that.
